The human mind is a fascinating thing.

     Territoriality.
Animals mark their territory with scents. Interestingly enough, they mark their mates with scent too.
For humans, it's far more subtle. Far more dangerous.
The human female uses tactics that would do a pro spy proud. She always has a trick up her sleeve, and if that doesn't work, she'll improvise. It's like a game of chess, where every move counts, and if you lose focus for even an instant, it's check and mate for you.
She'll begin by being constantly in the company of her chosen mate, so as to send out a clear signal, "he's taken." This is not a very effective technique, as she is competing against members of the same species, none of whom are easily discouraged. So, when she sees her target male in the prolonged company of other women, she'll sneak in unnoticed, and whisk him away. Not obviously, of course, because that is just too easy and humiliating. She'll isolate him, involve him in a conversation, play on her knowledge of his interests, and slow down her pace just enough to put some space between her alpha male and the undesired female.
When this fails, she'll try being direct, making it very clear to the butt-er that she should butt out. If only she had the horns to physically do so, she would do so at this stage. Because she is riled, oh so riled. It's best to stay away from both her and her (partner?) now. Yet, if she sees him drifting towards her once more, she pulls out her final weapon - PDA, or Public Display of Affection. That's like the last frontier, and even the most determined of tramps will back off before this. Why? If the male likes her enough to indulge in so much PDA, there's no point in trying to throw a monkey wrench into the works. Point taken.
All said and done, even if the other female doesn't have any other intentions towards the man, even if she just wants to be friends, the mating female will want her out of the picture. Because she's a threat to her idea of Paradise. Because that's how the human female is. Possessive, jealous, suspicious, competitive. Territorial. Which is why her life is so much more exciting than the male counterpart. And it doesn't matter whether you're the mating female or the other female, because it is pretty exciting at both the ends ;)
